What’s a Home Care Package (HCP)
A Home Care Package (HCP) is a government funded subsidy provided to eligible Australian’s over the age of 65 (or 50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders) to enable them to live independently and safely in their own home.
The funds are provided to an approved Home Care Provider, who coordinates a package of services and supports to meet the needs of the HCP Participant.
Home Care Packages are provided under a consumer directed care model, which means that the Home Care Package Participant can choose how and what to spend their funds on, in partnership with their chosen and approved provider.
There are four levels of Home Care Packages/Funding available – which are allocated according to the Participants needs.
- HCP Level 1 – for basic care needs
- HCP Level 2 – for lower level care needs
- HCP Level 3 – for intermediate care needs
- HCP Level 4 – for high level care needs.
Home Care Packages can pay for a range of services and supports – dependent on the Participants needs. For example:
- Personal care: bathing, hygiene and grooming
- Domestic care: laundry, ironing and housework
- Nursing and medical care
- Allied health services
- Shopping assistance
- Home delivered meals
- Respite
- Home or garden maintenance
- Assistance to access community activities
- Transport to medical appointment
What’s the different between HCP (Home care package provider) and NDIS?
The key difference is that the NDIS is designed to assist those between the ages of 7 and 65 years living with a disability, while Home Care Packages are for Australians over the age of 65 (or 50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders) who require assistance to continue living in their own home.
